A trailblazer in portable digital identity solutions has launched its latest innovation.
Toronto’s goConfirm this week unveiled ScamSpotter, an AI powered solution designed to analyze all forms of digital communication (such as suspicious texts or questionable emails) to assist consumers in identifying scams before they cause harm.
The Canadian company was launched in 2022 to “bring trust and safety to marketplaces like Facebook and Kijiji by making sure people knew who they were transacting with,” says chief executive officer Kirk Simpson.
“By using goConfirm and verifying the identities of both parties, people can feel safer in their interactions,” the CEO explains.
Simpson quickly learned that where money and technology intersect, fraud certainly lurks as a threat.
“Working in this space, we quickly saw first hand how people were being lured into online scams by bad actors impersonating people, companies, and government agencies,” he says.
Fortunately, Simpson “knew there was a way we could help.”
That way is through ScamSpotter, an online tool designed to assist people in making decisions about online interactions that may be fraudulent.
For example, upon receiving a suspicious correspondence that for any reason doesn’t feel quite “right,” ScamSpotter can take a screenshot for an instant analysis on the likelihood that the user is interacting with a possible scam.
“By leveraging generative AI technology, we have been able to build a tool that can help people identify and avoid online scams,” Simpson believes.
And beyond just detecting fraud tactics, ScamSpotter aims to empower users to detect scams in the future.
“Not only does it give users an actionable analysis to make better decisions, but it also helps educate people as they go on to make other decisions online and when faced with scams,” the startup posits.
The CEO acknowledges that the tactics ScamSpotter must detect and analyze are ever-evolving. It’s a challenge his startup is up for.
“As digital scams continue to evolve and adapt to changing technologies, ScamSpotter by goConfirm plans to do the same and stay ahead of the curve by providing users with dynamic solutions to safeguard their online privacy and security,” reads a statement from the Canadian company. “This ongoing evolution ensures the tool maintains peak performance and minimizes the occurrence of people falling victim to scams, while maintaining data safety.”
Confirm was cofounded by fintech veterans Simpson and Peter Carrescia in response to an increasing need for more trust in online interactions. The pair previously worked together on Wave Financial, which was acquired by H&R Block in 2019 for $537M.
