Toronto-headquartered Hut 8 Mining, a leading digital asset mining and high-performance computing infrastructure provider in North America, has teamed up with Sparta Group’s e-waste division, ERS International, to reduce its carbon footprint.
The partnership is part of ERS International’s carbon credit program, which has been established to reuse and recycle electronic waste.
Under the program, which is the first of its kind in Canada, for every metric tonne of carbon dioxide diverted from landfills, one carbon credit is generated. The carbon credits are verified by AET Group, who have been verifiers with BGIS and Brookfield.
By participating in the program, Hut 8 will recycle approximately 220 metric tonnes of electronic waste and earn around 5,200 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent serialized carbon credits.
“We chose to partner with ERS International because their innovative program allowed us to responsibly recycle obsolete miners while taking meaningful steps to achieve our carbon neutrality goals,” said Arnold Lee, Director of ESG at Hut 8.
“This program allows Hut 8 to minimize the impact of electronic waste and divert CO2 from releasing into the atmosphere, while generating verified carbon credits approved by the Canadian Standards Association.”
The program’s carbon credits will be received by Hut 8 in the first half of 2023, after accounting for shipping and processing costs. By participating in the program, Hut 8 will not only reduce its carbon footprint but also contribute to the fight against climate change.
The partnership between Hut 8 and ERS International is a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint in the digital mining sector, and it is a testament to the growing importance of sustainable practices in the industry.
