Shopify is extending its successful buy now, pay later (BNPL) partnership with Affirm beyond the United States, bringing Shop Pay Installments to its home market of Canada and preparing for expansion into the United Kingdom.
The move solidifies Affirm as Shopify’s exclusive pay-over-time provider in these regions, marking a significant step in their multi-year global agreement.
“Given the success of our long-standing partnership with Affirm in the U.S., bringing them to our merchants internationally is a no-brainer,” said Kaz Nejatian, COO of Shopify. “Affirm’s premier technology, world-class team, and commitment to transparency make them a natural fit to continue supporting merchants in the Shopify ecosystem.”
The expanded deal means eligible Canadian Shopify merchants will soon be able to offer Shop Pay Installments at checkout, allowing approved customers to split payments into biweekly or monthly plans. These plans, which feature term lengths of up to 24 months and interest rates as low as 0% APR, come with no hidden or late fees.
Affirm Founder and CEO Max Levchin highlighted the growing demand for flexible payment solutions worldwide. “Since [Shop Pay Installments’] launch in 2021, millions of consumers in the U.S. have relied on the value it offers,” he said. “We’ve heard from merchants all over the world who are clamoring for the growth potential it provides.”
The BNPL offering has been widely adopted in the U.S. through Shopify’s merchant network, and the new agreement sets the stage for further international growth.
